About the Career Compass Pilot

Last updated: September 2026

What this is

Career Compass is running a pilot to find out whether the tool itself is useful — whether students who use it feel more sure about their major or career direction afterwards. The pilot evaluates the product, so that the university can decide whether it is worth offering to students.

What the pilot actually looks at

Only these:

  • Your answer to one question, asked twice— “How sure are you about your major or career direction?” — once when you arrive and once after you finish an activity
  • An optional 1–5 rating of whether you'd recommend the tool to a friend, asked at the end
  • How long you spent using the tool, and which pilot link you arrived through

These answers are anonymous. They are matched to each other by a random code stored in your browser — no name, no email, no student ID. Every question is skippable.

What is never used in the evaluation

Your quiz answers, career matches, simulation responses and scores, and mentor conversations are there so the tool works for you and your progress is waiting when you come back. They are not part of the pilot evaluation: no conclusions about you are drawn from them, and they are never reported to your university.

As with any app, totals such as how many people finished a simulation help us find bugs and improve the product. Those totals are counts of activity, never individual answers, and never a study of you.

Participation is voluntary

You do not have to answer any of them, and every feature works whether you answer or not. Skipping them, or stopping at any point, has no effect on your access, your grades, or your standing with your university. Nobody at your university sees who answered what.

How results are reported

Results are reported only as group totals describing the tool — for example, “average confidence among students who used the tool rose from 2.8 to 3.9 out of 5.” Individual answers are never published, and no quotes from participants are used. Because responses are anonymous, nothing in a report can be traced back to you.

What is never collected

Your student ID, date of birth, address, grades, or any government identifier. Your data is never sold, and it is not used to train outside AI models.

Your account and your data

  • Using the tool without an account is fine — nothing is saved between visits
  • With an account, you can request a copy of your data at any time
  • You can ask for your account and its data to be deleted at any time
  • You can ask questions before deciding anything

Email support@mycareercompass.fit for any of these.

If you are under 18, please skip the two confidence questions. You may still use everything else normally.

Questions or concerns

Career Compass is an independent tool, built by a Cal Lutheran undergraduate and offered to the university at no cost for this pilot. It is not a university system, and no grades or academic records are involved. Cal Lutheran's Research Protections Office reviewed this pilot in September 2026 and determined that it is not human subjects research, so no IRB approval is required. Contact support@mycareercompass.fit. If you have questions about your rights as a participant, you can contact your university's research office.
